C. Strengthening the role of the community in the sustainable of forest management in Nusalaut Island by Yayasan Hualopu.
Kewang is group of indigenous community selected by their village communities or the prominent figures of the village. The main tasks of kewang are to control and protect environmental or forest from the over utilizations or destructions by human activities. Therefore Kewang is usually use of Sasi as type of regulation to forbid people in harvesting of crops or catching fish in a period time determined by kewang. Recently, kewang and sasi as local custom of Maluku people are gradually eroded and start to replace by modern cultures which not concern with environmental values. This project is started to motivate indigenous community of some village in Nusalaut island for sustaining again their local customs in protecting and control the environment from destructions. A workshop on the roles of kewang and sasi has established in March 2008 and 100 people are attended the workshop. Furthermore the workshop recommended several decisions for revitalization of kewang and sasi through a workshop in October 2008. The next project activity is focus on the mapping of the space borders between land use system of the communities. Four villages (Nalahia, Akoon, Ameth and Abubu) were determined and each village had 10 persons involved in project, and then they are trained on how to collect data, to measure border line between land use spaces and to design map. After doing a study, the results are presented to the village communities and local government for improving the draft of map. Based on the evaluation indicators showed that in the first three months of the project Yayasan Hualopu has finished 2 main activities with realization of 100 %. Furthermore in the second monitoring which done in September 2008 indicated in Table 6.
